May 29: Home Sweet Home

May 29: A perfect morning. Sun and blue skies to brighten our day, lightening the mood as we embark on our last voyage and wrap up our Great Loop Adventure. Homeward bound. We slowly motored up the peaceful Mystic River, so serene at this early hour. Through the Mystic bridges, bascule and railroad, enjoying the quiet and the vibrant colors that have been painted on the morning's canvas.  We followed the well marked channel, past Greens Ledge Light, out onto Block Island Sound. With only a slight breeze blowing and the tide with us, the ride was quite comfortable, especially with the stabilizers turned on.  Block Island Sound to RI Sound past Watch Hill; its Coast Guard Station, as well as High Watch, a home owned by Taylor Swift since 2013 and the Ocean House Hotel, an iconic New England seaside resort perched high on the bluff.  We then approached Point Judith, its Coast Guard Station and lighthouse. The lighthouse, erected in 1816, replacing the original wooden one that was dest

May 28th: Mystic Seaport

May 28th:  After traveling through a stormy day yesterday, we woke to a calm but overcast morning. Pulled up anchor and got UW early, motoring out of Oyster Bay onto the Sound and heading for Mystic Seaport.  Far different from yesterday, Long Island Sound was calm, with just a few ripples. We were hoping for clear skies but within no time, fog settled in. Dense fog banks swirled around, sometimes so thick that visibility wasn't even 1/10 of a mile. These are the moments when you rely on radar and your fog horn and keep a sharp look out! Fortunately there were not too many boats on the water, and the radar detected those that were, so there really was no problem as far as us continuing travels. At one point a sailboat emerged out of the fog, looking like a ghost ship. After a few hours the fog lifted and we were able to enjoy the rest of the trip under sunny skies. Just what the doctor ordered on what will be one of our last travel days before we reach Padanaram! We arrived in Myst

May 27, 2024: Harlem River to Long Island Sound

May 27: On a foggy and drizzly morning, with the George Washington Bridge in the distance off our stern, we watched Paradise push off as we prepared to get underway also. It was bittersweet knowing they were in the early stages of their loop, heading up the Hudson, while we were finished and on our way home.  We elected to cruise the man-made Harlem River, rather than backtrack through New York Harbor to the East River. Boaters' reviews of the river were mixed, from "wear a bullet proof vest" to "a river not to be missed". Being adventurous, and not looking forward to facing the turmoil in New York Harbor, we chose the path less traveled!  The Harlem River is an 9 mile long tidal strait that separates Manhattan from the Bronx and connects the Hudson River and East River/Long Island Sound. Located at the junction of the Harlem and Hudson is the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge. We contacted the bridgetender for an opening just as we approached. Turning to starboard off the
