Radio Update

As previously noted we were set to order a new radio but discovered we would have to wait another week for installation. Time is ticking so we did a little more research. John decided to see if installing an external speaker might solve the problem. Luckily a friend had one that ended up fitting the bill, saving us quite a bit of money and time and keeping us on schedule for this week's departure.

We continued with final preparations on Tuesday, July 11th. This included setting up a block and tackle system which we will use to lower the mast when we are traveling through areas with fixed bridges too low for us to pass under. For example the Erie Canal has many such bridges. In fact we will not be able to cruise the full-length (western half) of the Canal as we can not fit under a 15'6" fixed bridge even with mast down. We will take the Oswego Canal route (21' vertical clearance) into Lake Ontario. We will also need to lower the mast again to pass under the lowest unavoidable fixed bridge on the Great Loop. This is located on the Illinois River and is charted at 19'6". I'm a bit anxious about the prospect of lowering the mast while John remains unperplexed!
