Day 81, 82, 83: Waiting for Good Weather

Day 81: October 7: Weather predictions did not disappoint. It was stormy, cloudy and windy with intermittent rain; a good day for a nap, cups of tea and a movie once our morning walk was done. Sandra and I walked to the pier; as we got closer to the lake the wind was blowing so hard we had to really lean into it to keep up our pace. 


A walk to the pier after dinner. Despite the cold and wind we were greeted by a stunning rainbow! Rather than a pot of gold, perhaps sunshine and warm winds wait at the end of it. 

Day 82: October 8: The sun came out quite a bit today so it wasn't quite as cold as yesterday. Winds kicked up again. We all kept ourselves busy with walks, meandering through stores, reading and movies. John and I wandered through an antique store, a favorite pastime of ours for years. We also checked out the local Family Dollar; always a good place to find essentials. Along the way we came across a very well maintained memorial to all Veterans of the Manistee community. Chicken wings for dinner! 


Day 83: October 9: John and David decided to take a morning walk to a marina located past the Maple Street Bridge to check on availability of fuel and water. Sandra and I took off on our regular 5 mile walk around the River Walk and through downtown. 

After speaking to the folks at the marina, David is planning on heading under the bridge to the marina first thing in the morning to fuel up and take on water in preparation for our potential departure on Wednesday. 

Later in the day we went to TJ's Pub and then the North Channel brewery. It was trivia night at North Channel. We gave it the "old college try" but did not fare too well. Guess we aren't up to date with TV shows and the like. We loved the poutine and I, for one, enjoyed a couple of local brews. 


The apps we use, one being Windy, continue to indicated 25 to 30 knots blowing on the lake. And so we wait.

Day 49: September 5: We were pretty sure we were anchored on granite here on Bustard Island so we kept checking our position. Our anchor is held by all chain; putting out 75 feet in 16 feet of water under pristine conditions most certainly provides secure holding as long as the anchor has something to sink into. But you can never take anything for granted. Luckily, there must have been just enough mud for the anchor to grab hold but the chain did continue sliding on the granite throughout the night, creating a haunting sound. The anchor alarm went off at one point during the night alerting us that we had swung out beyond the boundary settings. Being that the anchorage is narrow, there wasn't any room for error so John had set the parameters tightly. When the boat moves beyond that limit, the alarm notifies us of the change. Our Adventure Delayed

As I wrote in my June 15 th  post we were waiting for a new battery/charger inverter we had ordered from Canada. It did arrive on schedule and Captain John was able to install; we breathed a sigh of relief after testing revealed it worked.  We have had so many unanticipated “challenges” that it felt like we had received a great gift.    Our original UW target date was June 1 or thereabouts. It is now July 10th and we are still on our “pre-journey”.  I think pre-journey is a good way to think about this adventure as you can’t expect to just pull a boat out of winter storage, launch and go. Planning for such an adventure certainly requires getting the boat in tip top shape! We are John and Bonny Gifford from Westport, MA. We have been married for 43 years and have two grown sons, Seth and AJ who are both married with children.  Westport is a small coastal town that boasts farm land, stone walls and the lovely Noquochoke River which lies between Narragansett Bay and Buzzards Bay. As life long residents of Westport our family has enjoyed the river and beaches tremendously.  Now that we are both retired, we are anxious to get underway on the Great Loop on Slàinte Mhath (Slanj-ja-va), our GB 42 CL. Slàinte Mhath comes from the Gaelic and translates into good health. It’s a traditional Scottish and Irish toast that we became aware of many years ago while enjoying a Guiness in the Settle Inn in Stirling, Scotland.
