Day 119: Backtracking to Lenoir City: Fort Loudoun Lake

Day 119: November 14: Today we begin our journey back. we will head down-bound all the way to Pickwick Lake where the Tennessee River joins the Tenn-Tom Waterway on Pickwick Lake. On this trip the current will be with us so we should make good time and conserve fuel. 

We had to take drop the rental car off by 10:00 a.m. so we left the boat at 7:30 to get some groceries at the Publix about 1.5 miles away. Seeing some of the prices, I felt bad for the college kids who must shop here as it is so close to the campus. On second thought I felt bad for us retired folks who are on a fixed income.

We returned to the parking space at Calhoun's restaurant and lugged our overflowing grocery bags back to the boats. John and David then dropped the car off at Budget and grabbed an UBER back to the dock. We got UW as soon as they returned, bidding Knoxville and the University of Tennessee diehard fans adieu. 

I'm hoping I've snapped different pictures than the ones I took on the trip to Knoxville. At the risk of being repetitive, I'm posting more pictures of the outrageously large houses that sit on the riverbank on Fort Loudoun Lake. 



We noticed that the river was a lot lower than when we traveled it the other day. We could see how the river had receded, exposing more trees and leaving docks hanging as if suspended in air. It's hard to imagine that things can change so much in just a few days. 


As we came around a bend we saw one of the cliffs on fire. We could see flames shooting out in the middle of some of the trees. It appeared as though the fire must have started up above; embers probably fell, catching the lower growth on fire. The sky filled with smoke and the air became increasingly hazy. John called the fire department and was assured they had already been contacted about the fire. 


We traveled 37.7 NM in 5 hours back to Fort Loudoun State Park where we anchored on the way to Knoxville. The spot did not fail us once again; we were once again blessed with a glorious sunset and a peaceful night.

Day 53 Continued: Covered Portage Cove to Snug Harbour

 Day 53 Continued: September 9: The trip to Snug Harbour took about an hour as it was just over 6 miles southwest of us. Once again the water was calm. Along the way we noticed what looked like a gravel pit on the shore to our port and what looked liked a sandy beach on the starboard; something we haven't seen yet on this trip.  We carefully made our way into the small cove as the chart-plotter was showing very shallow depths, Reviews that have been written about this spot report that is a great anchorage that is protected from all winds. The cove is very deep especially in the middle, with great depths ranging from 30 to 45 feet. Entering the opening to the cove, we saw we had to watch for the shoals on the starboard side. The shelf comes over halfway across the entrance which is very narrow. Day 49, 50 & 51: Travel to Bad River Channel & Beaverstone Bay

Day 49: September 5: We were pretty sure we were anchored on granite here on Bustard Island so we kept checking our position. Our anchor is held by all chain; putting out 75 feet in 16 feet of water under pristine conditions most certainly provides secure holding as long as the anchor has something to sink into. But you can never take anything for granted. Luckily, there must have been just enough mud for the anchor to grab hold but the chain did continue sliding on the granite throughout the night, creating a haunting sound. The anchor alarm went off at one point during the night alerting us that we had swung out beyond the boundary settings. Being that the anchorage is narrow, there wasn't any room for error so John had set the parameters tightly. When the boat moves beyond that limit, the alarm notifies us of the change.
