Day 215: Travel on the Chesapeake

Day 215: May 17: Left Hospital Point at 6:30 a.m. hoping for fair winds and calm seas. Traveled out of the busy harbor, past the navy and coast guard bases. Looking at the NEBO app, we noticed very few, if any, fellow Loopers moving at this early hour. It took until 8:00 a.m. when the waterway livened up with boaters.

Before long, even though the wind was not blowing, waves started to kick up, turning the next few hours into a very unpleasant voyage. Up and down, the bow plunged low into the valleys and rose on the crest of the large waves. For the first time on the trip we saw water pour through the hawse pipe. Thankfully, after a few hours, things started to calm down the further north we went. It was hard to believe that the untamed water eventually became calm. By the time we reached Smith Island where we had planned to anchor just outside the inlet to the town of Tylerton, MD, it was like glass.

Overnight wind was predicted to be 4 knots from the east. Anchoring on the west side of the island, we would be protected pretty well. After hunting around for a spot not loaded with crab pots, we finally dropped the hook in about 12 feet.

Another long 10 hour day, putting over 70 miles behind us.
