Day 220: May 22: The marina was peaceful this morning. Being early in the season, there are not a lot of boaters around, although there are plenty of boats. I imagine things change drastically during the summer months.
Paul May, the man who arranges for divers, showed up exactly at 8:00 a.m. with a diver. John and Paul stood on the dock listening to what the diver saw, asking questions and troubleshooting. Hearing the spur cutter was spinning around the shaft, they told the diver to remove it. Sure enough, therein lies the problem; the spur cutter had broken. Once loose, it must have been sliding all around the shaft causing the loud banging noise. It will be an expensive item to replace at some point.
Looking at the wind prediction for the next few days, we now plan to leave for New York on Friday at daybreak. With gusts expected to blow 25 to 30 tonight, we decided to stay at the marina for another night and move to a nearby anchorage tomorrow (Thursday) for one more night before heading out on Friday.
We noticed the owner of the boat next to us (Bob) had arrived and was working on some project. He then surprised us by asking if we needed to go into town, noting he needed to go to Home Depot and would happily take us to a supermarket. Running low on some items, we took him up on his offer. We were surprised to learn Bob had just turned 80. I would have guessed he was in his early 70's. Goes to prove my favorite saying: "You rest, you rust".
The Golden Nugget Casino has several restaurants, all open on different days. We decided to try the Chart House's 4:00 to 6:00 happy hour. We arrived at 4:30 to find the bar and about 20 tables filled; we waited about 1/2 hour before a seat opened up. Calamari, crab cakes and prime rib sliders were delicious and the view was fantastic.
After enjoying dinner, we meandered into the casino. Not being gamblers, we just can't get over the size of this place. The festive rooms go on and on, filled with all sorts of games, music and lights!
Back to the dock, we chatted with Bob for awhile before retiring for the evening, but not before I defeated john at a game of RACKO!
